Buttne (that’s butt-acne for the uninitiated) is both figuratively and literally a pain in the behind.
The first thing to note is that those unsightly red spots on your derriere aren’t actually acne but folliculitis.
Dermatologist Debra Jaliman told Women’s Health that, “The bumps are formed by dead skin cells and bacteria in the hair follicles.”
And unfortunately, Jaliman says women who work out are particularly prone to them.
Here are the main causes behind buttne breakouts and how you can prevent them in the future.
1. Spin classes
Dermatologist Dr Howe told the Daily Mail that the growing popularity of Soul Cycle-style exercise classes has definitely contributed to an increase in buttne.
“The hairs are compressed against the tight material and the bike, which is just a source of friction,” he told the publication.
2. Tight activewear
Yep, unfortunately our beloved, bum-hugging tights are a culprit. Choose loose, cotton-based bottoms when you can, especially in the summer heat – tight nylon can trap sweat against the skin leading to inflammations. If you can’t let go of your leggings, make sure you’re sleeping in looser clothes.
3. Sub-par scrubbing
Jaliman told Women’s Health, “It’s best to shower right after a workout so you don’t sit around in clothing you’ve been sweating in that’s filled with bacteria.”
She recommends using a body wash with benzoyl peroxide as well as a loofah to further remove bacteria and dead cells that could be sitting on your skin’s surface.
