"Salt and Pepper" Eyelash Extensions Are the Weird New Way to Get Fuller-Looking Lashes
Mermaid lash extensions made waves last year with its fun, colorful look. Now, the latest lash extension trend has something in common with George Clooney. Let me explain.
Canadian lash expert Joanna Keller is known for her experimental lash extension looks like pink ombré and rainbow-hair color coordination, so leave it to her to make "salt and pepper" lash extensions a full-fledged thing. Just like the Hollywood silver fox's hair, Keller intersperses white lash extensions as she applies a set of standard black ones. Reason being? The unexpected white streaks amplify the texture of lashes, making them appear fluffier and wispier than ever.
"The white lashes add dimension to a black lash set the same way any type of highlighting would work," Keller explains. With tattoos, for example, Keller points out that adding hints of white can make a black-and-gray piece look brighter. She applied this same thought process to lashes to help create detail and depth.
When applying salt and pepper lash extensions to clients, Keller applies black ones as per usual. Then for the very bottom layer near the lash line, Keller glues on the white lashes. They end up making up about an eighth of the whole set.
The white lash extensions aren't as noticeable as they appear in the incredibly up-close photos. Instead, they create an optical-illusion effect. From far away, your lashes will appear wispy and textured, Keller says, making the look surprisingly work appropriate. Upon closer inspection, others will be able to spot the white mixed into your lash extension set, though. "This type of set really has people mesmerized and looking at your eyes for longer, wondering why your eyes are so beautiful," Keller adds.
At Keller's salon, Joanna Keller Beautique in Vancouver, the white lash extensions cost the same amount as the standard black ones. She also notes that they last just as long, too — about six to eight weeks. So for about a month, you can try out George Clooney's signature salt-and-pepper look on your lashes. You may never return to a full set of black lashes again.
