This Small Detail About Meghan Markle's Engagement Ring Will Make Your Heart Melt
Monday brought some royally good news: Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are engaged! Cue the countdown to a royal wedding with a fairy tale ending.
“His Royal Highness and Ms. Markle became engaged in London earlier this month,” Clarence House said in a statement, along with news that the wedding will take place in spring 2018, and that the newlyweds will live in Nottingham Cottage at Kensington Palace.
Prince Harry and Meghan posed for their official engagement photos and recorded a television broadcast at Sunken Gardens, one of Princess Diana’s favourite places, on Monday afternoon. People reports that Harry shared that he knew Meghan was the one, “The first time we met.”
While the couple didn’t divulge major details about the proposal, when asked if it was romantic, Harry replied: “Of course it was.” To which Meghan added: “Very.”
But what’s extra special about Meghan’s beautiful diamond engagement ring, designed by the Prince, is its sentimental tie to his mother, Princess Diana. The outside two diamonds are from Princess Diana’s collection, People reports.
The centre stone is a diamond from Botswana, a country that is meaningful for Harry, and one he often refers to it as his second home. “I first came in 1997, straight after my mum died. My dad told my brother and me we were going to Africa to get away from it all. This is where I feel more like myself than anywhere else in the world,” the Prince once said, reports ABC News, “I have this intense sense of complete relaxation and normality here.” There is even speculation that Prince Harry proposed to Meghan during their recent vacation in Botswana to celebrate her birthday. (Swoon!)
The internet is, of course, freaking out about the latest royal engagement. And the royal family shared their excitement, as well. According to a statement from Kensington Palace, the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh are “delighted for the couple and wish them every happiness.” And Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge said, “We are very excited for Harry and Meghan. It has been wonderful getting to know Meghan and to see how happy she and Harry are together.”
Thomas Markle and Doria Ragland, Meghan’s parents also shared their well-wishes. “We are incredibly happy for Meghan and Harry. Our daughter has always been a kind and loving person. To see her union with Harry, who shares the same qualities, is a source of great joy for us as parents,” a statement from Kensington Palace read. “We wish them a lifetime of happiness and are very excited for their future together.”
