Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk is Superintendent Pharmacist Hussain Abdeh, who said there is “clear evidence” that apple cider vinegar can help people to shift the pounds. “Studies have shown clear evidence to suggest that apple cider vinegar can help people to lose belly fat,” confirmed Abdeh. The pharmacist elaborated: “It has been suggested that the benefit of apple cider vinegar for weight loss is that it makes you feel fuller, which reduces your caloric intake.
“The research has shown that adding apple cider vinegar to a meal will help you to consume fewer calories later in the day, which can contribute to weight loss. “
Abdeh pointed out that apple cider vinegar has also been shown to “slow down how quickly food leaves your stomach”.
As such, those who consume apple cider vinegar tend to feel fuller for longer, meaning the likelihood of snacking on more food is minimised.
“So, garnishing a salad at lunchtime with apple cider vinegar may play a big part in helping you to shift a few pounds,” Abdeh suggested.

“However, because it makes food stay in your stomach for longer, consuming apple cider vinegar on a regular basis may be harmful for people suffering from gastroparesis.”
Abdeh explained that gastroparesis is a condition whereby “you cannot empty your stomach in the usual way”.
The NHS elaborated: “It’s thought to be the result of a problem with the nerves and muscles that control how the stomach empties.”
Symptoms of gastroparesis include:
- Feeling full very quickly when eating
- Feeling sick (nausea) and vomiting
- Loss of appetite
- Weight loss
- Bloating
- Tummy (abdominal) pain or discomfort
- Heartburn.
The national heath service pointed out that these symptoms can differ in severity, and they may come and go.
“See a GP if you’re experiencing symptoms of gastroparesis, as it can lead to some potentially serious complications,” the NHS advised.
Complications may include dehydration, gastro-oesophageal reflux disease, malnutrition, and unpredictable blood sugar levels.
If, however, you do not have symptoms of gastroparesis, occasionally including apple cider vinegar into a salad (as Abded suggested) should be helpful in your weight loss journey.
Tips to lose weight
This suggestion may be counterintuitive, but the NHS advise you to “not skip breakfast”.
By eating breakfast, you can top up on essential nutrients and feel less inclined to snack throughout the day.
In order to lose weight, you need to burn off more calories than you consume each day.
To do so, you need to be regularly active, which can include: walking, jogging, cycling, swimming, and/or dancing, and fitness classes.
In terms of those calories that you choose to consume, make sure you are eating foods that contain lots of fibre.
Fibre-rich foods can help you feel full, thereby decreasing the risk of snacking.
Examples of high-fibre foods include: fruits and vegetables; oats; whole grain bread; brown rice and pasta; beans, peas, and lentils.
