One approach to a longer lifespan lies in staving off the precursors of chronic conditions such as heart disease. A new study finds that a beloved drink does this with gusto. What’s more, a certain amount seems to be especially potent.
Whether you drink yours for an energy boost or to enjoy the characteristic taste, coffee offers more than a pleasant tasting dose of caffeine.
According to research, published in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology, the hot drink could boost your longevity while slashing your risk of heart disease.
In fact, the black beverage was found to reduce the risk of dying by as much as 27 percent.
The researchers found that decaf, ground and instant coffee were able to slash the risk of death by 14, 27 and 11 percent respectively.

Apart from determining the most potent type of coffee, the team also found the ideal amount of cups to enjoy.
The research suggested that two to three cups a day should do the trick.
Study author Professor Peter Kistler said: “In this large, observational study, ground, instant and decaffeinated coffee were associated with equivalent reductions in the incidence of cardiovascular disease and death from cardiovascular disease or any cause.
“The results suggest that mild to moderate intake of ground, instant and decaffeinated coffee should be considered part of a healthy lifestyle.”
Furthermore, the study found that apart from cutting the risk of death, coffee was able to stave off cardiovascular disease – a leading cause of death worldwide – as well.
Looking at more than 449,000 participants between the ages of 40 and 69, the researchers used data from the UK Biobank.
These subjects had to fill out a questionnaire detailing how much coffee they drank daily as well as what their go-to coffee drink was.
From cappuccino to filtered coffee, the researchers then created groups based on the participant’s preferred choice of instant, ground or decaffeinated coffee.

Following an adjustment for factors like age, underlying health conditions and smoking status, the research team found that all types of coffee were associated with a reduction in death from any cause.
When it came to cardiovascular disease, decaffeinated, ground, instant coffee, were linked to a six, 20, and nine percent reduced likelihood of the condition respectively.
Similarly to the risk of death, the lower risk was observed with two to three cups of the hot drink a day.
Furthermore, ground and instant coffee were also found to reduce the risk of arrhythmias, with four to five cups of ground and two to three cups of instant coffee being identified as the most beneficial for this condition.
In case you’re not aware, arrhythmias describes an abnormality of the heart’s rhythm that could be potentially fatal, according to the NHS.
Professor Kistler added: “Caffeine is the most well-known constituent in coffee, but the beverage contains more than 100 biologically active components.
“It is likely that the non-caffeinated compounds were responsible for the positive relationships observed between coffee drinking, cardiovascular disease and survival.
“Our findings indicate that drinking modest amounts of coffee of all types should not be discouraged but can be enjoyed as a heart healthy behaviour.”
