HIV – the virus that causes the life-threatening infection AIDS – can be detected on the spot thanks to a home testing kit. Dr Ranj demonstrated how quick and easy it is to get tested for HIV on ITV’s This Morning. Taking viewers through the procedure, he advised cleaning your hands in warm water first to “milk your finger”.

He then jabbed the end of his finger, giving it a squeeze before adding a droplet to the testing device.

According to Dr Ranj, if the device shows a positive result, you should get tested formally.

Rapid testing results

According to aids charity Terrence Higgins Trust, many services offer rapid testing, which means a finger-prick test that will give you a result within minutes.

“A self testing kit ordered online and done at home will normally give you a result up to 15 minutes, depending on the kit,” explains the charity.
