When the coronary artery is completely blocked, either by fatty deposits or a blood clot, the heart will be starved of oxygen and its cells will begin to die; this is known as a heart attack. The longer that blood flow into the heart is interrupted, the more damaged the heart will become. What is the best diet shown to help significantly reduce your risk?

According to a study published in The Journal of Nutrition, a whole-grain diet has been found to be one of the best ways to eat to reduce your risk of a heart attack.

Research found a link between higher whole grain consumptions with a lowered increase in certain heart disease risk factors.

Experts believe the link lies in refining which removes fibre and its heart-healthy nutrients.

The study hypothesised that by eating whole grains a person can experience lowered blood pressure, waist circumference and heart-healthy properties.

The researchers’ goal in conducting the study was to determine how whole grain versus refined grain consumption affects various risk factors for heart disease.

The team analysed 3,121 people with an average age in the mid-50s.

The researchers looked at the participants’ health outcomes for a median of 18 years to determine what effect whole, and refined grains had.

They compared the changes that occurred at four-year intervals.

The team found that waist size increased less among those who ingested more whole grains.

They also found that by eating more whole grains, a person experienced lowered cholesterol levels which is a major risk factor for heart attacks.

According to WebMD, three main meal staples could be contributing to the plaque problem.

Rice, bread, and pasta – made from white flour – are missing healthy fibre, vitamins, and minerals.

“Refined grains quickly convert to sugar, which your body stores as fat,” WebMD stated.

“A diet high in refined grains can cause belly fat, which studies link to heart disease.”

A diet that emphasises the intake of vegetables, fruits, and whole grains are ideal in reducing the risk of a heart attack.

To keep the scales in favour of the healthy diet, you must also limit the number of unhealthy foods you eat.

This is why it is better to cut down on sweets, red meats, and sugar-sweetened beverages.
