Boston University School of Medicine has determined a link between increased clinical severity in COVID-19 patients and a certain health hazard. What is it?

As coronavirus continues to rip though the world, it’s been identified as a “public health emergency of international concern”.

While the globe patiently waits for a successful vaccine, the need for therapeutic methods to ease symptoms has been considered.

For their analysis, the researchers took into account hospital data of 235 patients.

All patients included in the study had been infected with SARS-CoV-2 (severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2).

Of those examined, 74 percent were classified as having a “severe COVID-19 infection”.

Interestingly, 32.8 percent of those individuals were found to be deficient in vitamin D.

After adjusting for cofounding factors, “there was a significant association between vitamin D sufficient and reduction in clinical severity”.

Upon further investigation, vitamin D had been shown to have “immunomodulatory activity”.

In essence, the researchers propose that “vitamin D has a protective effect against COVID-19”.

It’s thought adequate amounts of vitamin D “might help in the treatment of COVID-19 by preventing the cytokine storm” – a common cause of mortality.

Vitamin D was linked to lower inflammatory markers and higher levels of immune cells in the blood.

As of now, Public Health England (PHE) recommends all adults to supplement with vitamin D – and to continue doing so throughout winter.

People are advised by PHE to take a daily supplement containing 10mcg (40 units) of vitamin D daily.

This vitamin D supplement is derived from an organic plant source called Lichen.

Are you deficient in vitamin D?

The Cleveland Clinic noted that fatigue, bone pain, muscle aches and pains, as well as depression could be indicative of a vitamin D deficiency.
