Got ridges in your nails? Here’s what they could say about your health

You can tell a lot about your health by looking at your hands.

Ridges in your fingernails could indicate that your diet is lacking in nutrients.

It could also point to skin disorders and other illnesses.

Dr Samantha Eisman, a Consultant Dermatologist at Sinclair Dermatology, and beauty professional Tracey Winder of Mavala recently spoke about the problem.

The health experts told Daily Mail: “Ridges often indicate a lack of the mineral sulphur in your diet.

“The mineral sulphur is readily available in protein-rich foods such as meat, poultry, eggs and milk."

In these instances, ridges are often nothing to worry about.

Incorporating more minerals into your diet could help to make the bumps disappear.

Tracey Winder explained: "If you are a vegan, you can get your mineral sulphur intake through garlic, onions, cabbage, cucumbers, Brussel sprouts, turnips, nuts, kale, lettuce, kelp and raspberries."

Ridges could also point to problems with the skin.

The health expert added: “With nail erosions, the principle causes behind this are psoriasis, eczema, alopecia or traumas.”

This isn’t the only issue to take note of.

Previously, we revealed that white spots on fingernails could be a concern.

This condition is known as leukonychia.

Pale lines or speckles on the nails could suggest that patients are battling an infection.

They may also indicate those who have deficiencies in their diets.
