High blood pressure is a common condition that affects more than a quarter of all adults in the UK. You could lower your blood pressure reading by simply eating more celery, it’s been claimed.

High blood pressure – which is also known as hypertension – puts extra stress on blood vessels and vital organs.

The condition could lead to some deadly complications, including strokes and heart attacks.

It’s crucial that your hypertension is diagnosed as soon as possible.

You could lower your chances of developing high blood pressure by adding eating more celery.

Celery is one of the best vegetables for hypertension patients, according to Blood Pressure UK’s CEO Katharine Jenner.

The vegetable is rich in nitrates, which is converted in the body into nitrite and nitric oxide.

Nitric oxide helps to relax and dilate blood vessels, which subsequently lowers blood pressure.

Celery, beetroot and leafy green vegetables are the best sources of nitrates.

“You can take action yourself to lower your blood pressure, by eating less salt, more fruit and vegetables, taking more exercise and being a healthy weight,” said Jenner.

She told Express Health: “The most important thing for the majority of people with raised or high blood pressure is lifestyle.

“What you eat and do on a daily basis decides what your blood pressure will be.

“Beetroot and celery are rich in chemicals called nitrates which are known to help lower blood pressure if you eat them often enough.”

Meanwhile, you could also lower your blood pressure by regularly eating avocado, it’s been claimed.

Avocado doesn’t contain much salt, while also being packed full of potassium.

Potassium helps to regulate the amount of sodium in the body, which subsequently protects against hypertension.

The fruit also contains plenty of calcium, magnesium and vitamin E; all of which contribute to a healthy blood pressure.

High blood pressure is often known as ‘the silent killer’, because symptoms only tend to reveal themselves if you have extremely high blood pressure.

The most common high blood pressure symptoms include a pounding in your chest, finding blood in your urine, and severe headaches.

It’s crucial that all adults over 40 years old check their blood pressure at least once every five years.
