Kat Von D Is Creating a New Liquid Liner Based on Fan Feedback
No conversation about liquid liner occurs without mention of Kat Von D's famous Tattoo Liner. It's a been a Best of Beauty and Reader's Choice Award winner many times over, and pretty much any liner-wearing individual has given it a go. It's just really good, going so far as to remain untouched through a car accident. It's so good that Kat Von D expanded the range to include three more types of liquid liners. The woman knows what she's good at, and she knows what the people want: liquid eyeliner.
As they say, though, you can't please everyone. But that won't stop Von D from trying. With the limited initial release of Liner X, Kat Von D will be crowdsourcing the new liquid liner's final formula via feedback from you. (I know, it sounds confusing. It's not not confusing.)
So here's the low-down. Liner X is a work in progress, a preview, a prototype. It's a pen with a flexible felt-tip pointed applicator. The ink is black as night, waterproof, smudge-resistant and long-wear. It's similar to the original Tattoo Liner but with a slightly fatter felt tip applicator — which I find genius because that means it can keep pumping out a smooth flow of ink while I'm taking my sweet time perfecting my lines and angles. I hate when liquid liner tips dry out midway and then one eye is streaky while the first one was fine.
I wore it all day, two days in a row. I like it. The finish is a semi-gloss satin finish. It's not that shiny per se but definitely not matte. I find that it does last longer than my Tattoo Liner and the newer Dagger Liner as well. It barely smudged at all, and come time to wash my makeup off at night, my wings were intact. Also worth noting — it came off easily with my oil-based cleanser (I'm a staunch double-cleanser), which is nice. No one likes scrubbing liner off their poor little eyelids.
It’s very difficult applying eyeliner using your phone’s front-facing camera, FYI.
Honestly, I have little negatives to report about this. The one thing I'd like is for the felt tip to be a wee bit firmer. It's more difficult to sharpen my liner wings when the liner tip is bending all willy-nilly. The tip is the most important part of a liquid liner, dare I say. That's actually why I liked the Dagger Liner in the first place. Maybe there's room for a dual-ended liquid liner situation — one side with a felt tip and the other side with a sharp brush tip. How cool would that be?
Liner X will drop exclusively on Sephora.com on October 19. For $20, you can purchase for yourself a bomb prototype, fill in your feedback in Sephora's review section and contribute to Liner X's final form. Kat Von D will only be releasing a limited amount, which will be available "while supplies last" (you know what that means). After that, you'll have to wait after the trial and reformulation period before you can purchase whatever Liner X becomes in 2019. One thing for sure — it'll be a vegan and cruelty-free formula, as are all Kat Von D products.
