I feel awkward getting my private parts examined by a doctor, but I know I need to. What should I do?
Before you get undressed, speak up and share with your health care provider (HCP) that you feel awkward about this part of the exam. Together you can discuss ways to make it less uncomfortable. If you’re worried about getting an erection during the exam, know that this happens to many patients and it’s okay. Your HCP is a trained professional, and you’re correct that the genital exam is an important part of the exam for your health. You may feel awkward, but you should never feel uncomfortable. Your HCP should always wear gloves, and you have a right to have another health professional in the room if you prefer.
