What is a ketogenic diet
A ketogenic diet, or keto for short, is a low-carb, high-fat diet that can provide a number of health benefits including helping you to lose visceral fat.
A keto diet effectively turns the body into a fat-burning machine, while simultaneously helping a person lose weight and boost their energy levels.
The keto diet has some similar traits reminiscent of the popular Atkins diet and other low-carb plants.
The diet involves dramatically reducing the carbohydrate consumption and substituting fat instead.
The keto diet was originally created to treat neurological diseases including epilepsy, however, over the last century, countless studies have examined the other health benefits this diet can offer.
Ketogenic diets are effective for losing weight, burning belly fat and lowering the risk factors for certain disease.
While low-fat diets are traditionally recommended for those looking to lose their belly fat, research shows that keto is, in fact, a superior approach to helping lose visceral fat.
Unlike many diets which leave a person feeling deprived and hungry, the keto diet is satisfying and leaves a person feeling fuller for longer due to its high consumption of protein.
Protein may be the most important macronutrient for weight loss.
Research indicates that it can help reduce cravings by a whopping 60 percent, boost metabolism by 80 to 100 calories per day and helps a person to consume 441 calories less a day.
Not only can a high protein diet help you to lose fat, but it may also help a person to avoid regaining weight.
Protein is particularly effective in reducing belly fat.

In a study with the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, the intake of macronutrients and how it effects waist circumferences was investigated.
The research indicated that protein was linked to a significantly reduced chance of belly fat gain over five years in women.
The study concluded that some macronutrient subgroups in the study had a significant loss of waist circumference.
It was also revealed that refined carbs and oils added to more abdominal fat and linked fruits and vegetables to help reduce fat.
In a study with the National Library of Medicine, the ketogenic diet and how it helps with fat loss was analysed.
The study noted: “The ketogenic diet is a very low-carbohydrate, high-fat, and adequate-protein diet that induces many metabolic adaptions when calories intake is not limited.
“It’s therapeutic use in a range of diseases including cancer is currently investigated with the objective to assess the impact of a six-week ketogenic diet on the abdominal fat distribution in adults.”
The study included 28 overweight and obese adults and found that those who followed a ketogenic diet lost more fat, especially visceral fat, than people following a low-fat diet.
