Covid can ‘increase risk of erectile dysfunction’, study says
A new study has found that men who've had coronavirus are more likely to suffer from erectile dysfunction (ED).
The research – which is tagged as 'Vaccinate so you can ejaculate' – was led by Emmanuele A. Jannini, MD, professor of endocrinology and medical sexology, University of Rome Tor Vergata, Rome, Italy.
It found that the risk of ED can be six times higher in men who have had Covid-19.
Researchers also found ED, which is the inability to get or keep an erection firm enough to have sex, can be both a short-term and a long-term complication of Covid.
The study was published on March 20 in the journal Andrology.
Preliminary numbers also indicated that men with ED are more than five times more likely to have Covid-19.
Despite the findings, some experts say there may not be sufficient evidence to prove that there is a relationship between ED and Covid-19.
According to Jamaica Star, Urologist Dr Elon Thompson commented: "You are going to have to look at persons of a similar age group, socio-economic status, serious illnesses that could also be contributing to ED.
"You are going to then look at that group and compare them with persons who have COVID and those who don’t and then you follow them over a period of time and see what happens and this is the only way one can really make a distinction that Covid-19 can cause erectile dysfunction."
Psychologist and sexologist Dr Sidney McGill also said scientists are still learning about the virus and as a result, and therefore doubts the research.
He added: "I don’t think it (ED) is purely a disease problem. We need to recognise that there is the social and intimate implications with the lockdowns and restrictions.
"A lot of men use work, bar and other places outside of the home as a form of distraction of the stress from home.
"Now it is harder for them to function so a lot of them are going to have ED because they have long-standing relational issues with their partners."

The news comes after a new study earlier this year claimed Covid poses 'global threat' to male fertility with virus able to change shape of sperm.
The research, published in journal Open Biology, claimed the presence of ACE2 receptors (the coronavirus' favourite entry point) in the testicles makes male genital cells a potential infection target.
There have also been reports that a case of Covid depletes and damages the body's Leydig and Sertoli cells, both of which are essential for reproductive health and sperm production.
Eek, I'm sure many more may be wanting their jab after seeing this research!
