Bristol will be the first British city to have ZERO smokers but other cities such as Derby won’t be smoke-free until 2050, study finds

  • The country will finally kick the smoking habit as soon as 2050 at current rates
  • Wokingham and York will be next local authorities that will stop smoking in 2026
  • Research is based on a current smoking rate of 11.14 per cent of people in Bristol

Bristol will be the first city in England to go completely smoke free – as soon as 2024, according to a study.

At current rates, the country will finally kick the smoking habit by 2050, according to the research by Frontier Economics, commissioned by cigarette firm Phillip Morris Ltd.

The research is based on a current smoking rate of 11.14 per cent of people in Bristol. The number of smokers in Bristol fell by 9.95 percentage points between 2011 and 2017, so the figure is based on current trends continuing.

But some areas will still be smoking until 2050 – including North Lincolnshire, Derby and Cheshire East.

The new figures are detailed on a website launched by PML which presents ONS data for postcode areas through an interactive tool. Not all parts of England are successfully quitting smoking.

One area, Cheshire East, saw a rise in smoking – by one per cent in 2017 – compared to six years earlier.

The three areas with the highest rates of smoking – Kingston upon Hull, Blackpool and North Lincolnshire – have an average smoking rate of 22.1 per cent compared to an average rate of 8.8 per cent among the three lowest, which are Rutland, York and Wokingham.

Phillip Morris Ltd – the US-based maker of cigarettes including Marlboro – manufactures e-cigarettes which it claims are less harmful than conventional tobacco, although this is not accepted by many leading health experts who warn that e-cigarettes also pose health risks.

Mark MacGregor, UK Corporate Affairs Director of PML, said: ‘Our business is committed to going smoke free as fast as possible and ultimately stopping selling cigarettes altogether.

‘What this research reveals is the huge variations in the decline in smoking in different parts of the country. We want to play our part in working with local businesses, retailers and councils in the areas with highest smoking rates.

‘ It is not going to be easy getting smokers in these areas to stop.

‘One of the keys to success will be ensuring they understand that there are more alternative options than ever that can help them give up cigarettes for good.’
