High blood pressure, underlying diabetes and ageing are all common risk factors for men with erectile dysfunction.

However, did you known that hot weather may also affect male impotence?

The weather alone is unlikely to directly cause erectile dysfunction (ED) however, extreme heat and certain environmental factors associated with hot weather can indirectly affect sexual performance, according to health experts from UK Online Pharmacy Chemist Click.

During hot and humid weather, you are at higher risk of dehydration and heat-related illnesses, with the body experiencing increased perspiration and fluid loss.

When a man is dehydrated there is a decrease in blood volume, which can cause a reduction in blood flow to various organs and tissues, including the penis.

"Proper blood flow is crucial for achieving and maintaining an erection," superintendent pharmacist Abbas Kanani, MRPharmS explained.

"Dehydration can cause blood vessels to constrict or narrow as a way for the body to conserve fluid. This constriction can affect blood flow to the penis, potentially hampering erectile function."

The severity of dehydration can depend on a number of factors, such as climate, level of physical activity and diet and is typically not a primary cause of long-term or chronic erectile dysfunction.

However, if someone is already predisposed to experiencing difficulties with achieving or maintaining an erection, dehydration may exacerbate those issues.

As well as the overall health benefits of keeping your body hydrated, drinking enough water and balancing electrolytes supports healthy blood circulation.

The pharmacist suggests "electrolytes such as sodium, potassium and magnesium are essential for maintaining proper fluid balance and supporting healthy circulation".

"Men should also drink an adequate amount of water throughout the day, especially during hot weather, physical activity or when experiencing symptoms of dehydration," they said.

"Limit caffeine and alcohol which have diuretic effects and keep an eye on the colour of your urine. Clear or light-coloured urine generally indicates good hydration, while dark-coloured urine may suggest dehydration."

Fatigue and low energy levels, which can indirectly impact sexual desire and performance, can also be caused by extreme heat, discomfort and inadequate hydration.

When men experience psychological issues such as feelings of stress, irritability or mood changes, it can interfere with sexual arousal and contribute to difficulties with achieving or maintaining an erection.

"It may be more challenging to engage in sexual activity with the same level of intensity and stamina when you're feeling tired or low on energy, this can make it more difficult to sustain an erection or reach orgasm," said the expert.

Persistent difficulties can lead to men developing sexual performance anxiety, a psychological disorder stemmed from a fear of losing an erection.

As well as this, some medications used to manage conditions exacerbated by hot weather, such as blood pressure medicine and diuretics, may have potential side effects that can impact sexual function.

Summer heat is also proven to circulate mould spores and pollen, making seasonal allergies worse. There are indirect connections between allergies and erectile dysfunction too.

Drowsiness, fatigue and reduced libido are all common side effects for allergy medications, such as antihistamines, which can impact sexual function. Allergy symptoms, particularly during the night, can disrupt sleep patterns and quality which may negatively impact sexual function and libido.

Erection problems are already common and worldwide prevalence of erectile dysfunction is expected to increase to 322million men by 2025.

If you are experiencing persistent or recurring difficulties with achieving or maintaining an erection, it is advisable to consult with a doctor or urologist, said the expert.

Kanani also says there are many treatment options available to help with achieving and maintaining an erection. Many popular and easily acquired medications are available to combat the physical symptoms of ED, by encouraging blood flow to the penis.
