Doctors pluck 11 live worms from a five-month-old’s EYEBALL after the baby contracted a horrific roundworm infection from their neighbour’s pet

Doctors have plucked 11 live worms from a baby’s eye after the child contracted a horrific roundworm infection from a neighbour’s pet.

The boy, named as ‘Dong Dong’, was taken to hospital after their mother noticed discomfort in his eye.

The five-month-old, from China, was inspected by medics and found to be suffering from a nematode infection.

Doctors discovered numerous worms slithering on the surface of the eyeball as well as inside the eyelid.

Footage of the gruesome procedure to remove the worms was taken at the Xi’an No 1 Hospital in the capital of north-western China’s Shaanxi province. 

The worms are believed to be of the Thelazia callipaeda species – a parasitic nematode first discovered in China over 100 years ago.

The worms are the cause of the nematode infection thelaziasis in Europe and Asia, which sees the parasites inhabit the eyes of dogs, cats and humans. 

The procedure took 21 minutes, with medics plucking the live worms out one at a time using tweezers.

According to reports, the parasites have been sent for analysis in order to determine more details about the infection. Dong Dong, meanwhile, is continuing to receive treatment. 

Dong Dong’s mother revealed to doctors that she does not keep dogs or cats but noted her child comes in contact with her neighbour’s pets.

WHAT IS ROUNDWORM AND WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS? 

Roundworms can infest the human gut, where they live, feed and reproduce. They don’t often cause any symptoms, but are more likely to in large numbers.

A roundworm infection – also sometimes known as ascariasis or ascaris – is usually easy to treat.

Roundworms are parasites. They use the human body to stay alive, feed and reproduce.

A roundworm infection doesn’t usually cause symptoms. People usually see their GP because they’ve seen a worm in their stools.

Less commonly, symptoms can include a high temperature and dry cough 4-16 days after swallowing the eggs.

If a large number of eggs have been ingested, or if the worms move from the small intestine to other parts of the body, they can cause serious complications, such as a bowel obstruction. 

However, in England, these types of complications are rare.
